In 1633 he moved to Ireland under the patronage of Thomas Wentworth, first earl of Strafford (1593-1641), to become Master of the Revels (a royal office responsible for stage censorship). He might have danced in Ben Jonson's masque The Gypsies Metamorphosed in 1621, and, around that time, he injured himself and became lame thereafter.
